Headway is one of the best-known apps for that: it offers book summaries designed to be read or heard in about 15 minutes. What is the Headway app?
Headway is a book summary and micro-learning app. It launched in 2019, built by a team led by Anton Pavlovsky, and is now run by Headway Inc. Headway’s website says it has more than 60 million learners worldwide and over 60 million app downloads, and lists more than 1,700 summaries. Alongside the summaries, the app uses challenges, flashcards and streaks to make learning feel more like a game.
Is the Headway app free?
Partly. You can download Headway for free, and its free tier gives limited access: according to Nibble, an app from the same company, the free plan includes one full book summary per day. Most of the library, and features such as unlimited summaries, need a Premium subscription.
How much does the Headway app cost?
Headway Premium is sold as a subscription through the app stores and Headway’s website. In October 2026 the US App Store listed Headway Premium in-app purchases ranging from $12.99 to $89.99, but it doesn’t say which price matches which billing period. The offer you see can vary by country, platform and promotion, and Headway may offer a free trial. Before you subscribe, check the trial length, the renewal price and the renewal date shown at checkout, and set a reminder to cancel if you’re only trying it.

A 15-minute summary is a fast way to decide whether a book is worth reading in full, or to refresh your memory of one you’ve read. It is not a substitute for the full book: a short summary inevitably leaves out detail and nuance.

You can listen to summaries instead of reading them, and adjust the playback speed.
Syncs across devices
If you sign in on another device, you can pick up where you left off.
Easy to browse
You can search the library and browse by category.
Streaks
Daily reminders and streaks encourage a regular habit, which helps if you are paying for a subscription.
Cons of the Headway app
These points are from our original review in January 2024. Headway updates the app regularly, so some may have changed.
Notes
There was no option to write your own notes on a paragraph or a whole summary.
No landscape mode
The app couldn’t be used in landscape mode.
Cannot export highlights
You could highlight parts of a summary but not export the highlights.
No rating option
You couldn’t rate individual summaries, and the library showed only books in progress, not finished ones.
Narrow focus
Most summaries are of business and self-development books, so readers looking for fiction or a broader range may be disappointed.

In October 2026, Headway had a rating of 4.6 out of 5 from about 117,000 ratings on the US App Store, where it is listed as “Headway - Daily Micro Learning”. Store ratings are self-selected and change over time, so read recent written reviews too, especially comments about billing and cancelling.
Is the Headway app worth it?
Headway may be worth paying for if:
- You want quick overviews of non-fiction books for work or personal growth.
- You prefer short summaries, read or listened to on the go.
- Streaks, challenges and flashcards help you stay consistent.
- You will use it often enough to justify the subscription price in your country.
It is less suitable if you mainly read fiction or want the full depth of a book. If you are unsure, start with the free tier or a trial, check the renewal price before it ends, and cancel through the store you subscribed with if it isn’t for you.
