Safari has been the default browser on iOS and iPadOS since the beginning, and for a long time it was the only option — there was no way to change your device's default browser before iOS 14. That changed with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, which let you set any installed browser as your default. Safari remains a solid, fast, well-integrated choice, but depending on your priorities around privacy, cross-platform sync, or specific features, one of these five alternatives might suit you better.
1. Google Chrome
Chrome is the world's most-used browser, and its biggest practical advantage on iOS is seamless cross-device sync if you also use Chrome on Windows, Android, or ChromeOS — bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs carry over automatically. Built-in Google Translate and voice search are also more deeply integrated than on Safari.
2. Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge is the natural choice if you're embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem (Windows, Office, Outlook) and want synced history, passwords, and collections across devices. It's built on the same Chromium engine as Chrome, so extension and site compatibility is similar.
3. Mozilla Firefox
Firefox is built by Mozilla, a nonprofit-backed organization, and is generally considered the most privacy-oriented of the mainstream cross-platform browsers, with built-in tracker blocking turned on by default. It's a solid pick if privacy is your primary reason for leaving Safari.
4. Opera
Opera's standalone single-handed-browsing app, previously called Opera Touch, was rebranded simply to Opera for iOS in 2021 and continues to be developed under that name. It includes a built-in ad blocker and a free built-in VPN feature, which Safari doesn't offer natively.
5. DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo's browser is built privacy-first: it blocks trackers by default and doesn't build an advertising profile from your searches or browsing the way some other browsers' parent companies do. It's a reasonable alternative if you want Safari-like simplicity with stronger default privacy protections.
Which Should You Choose?
- Cross-platform sync with Windows/Android: Chrome or Edge.
- Privacy as the top priority: Firefox or DuckDuckGo.
- Built-in ad blocking and free VPN: Opera.
- Staying in the Apple ecosystem with tight Handoff/iCloud integration: Safari remains the better-integrated choice for that specific use case.
