Sargeras is one of the mightiest and most influential beings in Warcraft. He was once the champion of the titan Pantheon, a defender of creation. However, after learning of the threat posed by the void lords, he came to believe that a lifeless universe was better than one the Void could dominate. He set out to purge the universe of life and created the Burning Legion, a vast army of demons and corrupted races, to carry out his dark crusade.

The Fall of Sargeras
As the Pantheon’s champion, Sargeras fought demons across the cosmos for ages. Then he discovered that the void lords wanted to corrupt a young world-soul into a dark titan, and he cleaved that planet in two to stop them. Convinced that the Void would eventually win, he concluded that all life had to be destroyed. He destroyed the demon prison world of Mardum, which warped him into a being fueled by fel magic, and offered demons a choice between power and destruction. The demons who joined him formed the Burning Legion, which burned one world after another.

The Tomb of Sargeras
Sargeras first tried to invade Azeroth during the War of the Ancients, when Queen Azshara’s Highborne opened a portal to the Twisting Nether for his Legion. The night elves, Cenarius and the dragons stopped the invasion in a climactic battle that destroyed the Well of Eternity, an event known as the Great Sundering.
Centuries later, Aegwynn defeated Sargeras’ avatar and sealed its corpse in the former Temple of Elune, which the Great Sundering had sunk beneath the sea. The temple became known as the Tomb of Sargeras. During the Second War, the orc warlock Gul’dan raised the tomb hoping to claim Sargeras’ power, but its demonic guardians tore him apart. Illidan Stormrage later used the Eye of Sargeras, a powerful artifact, to focus a spell that nearly leveled Northrend, until the night elves interrupted him. In World of Warcraft: Legion, an alternate-timeline Gul’dan reopened the tomb so the Legion could invade Azeroth again, and players face the Avatar of Sargeras and Kil’jaeden in the Tomb of Sargeras raid.
The Fate of Sargeras
The Legion’s final defeat came on Argus, the world it had turned into its stronghold. In the Antorus, the Burning Throne raid, the heroes of Azeroth defeated Argus the Unmaker. The six titans of the Pantheon then combined their power to pull Sargeras to the Seat of the Pantheon, where he was imprisoned in his own throne. Illidan Stormrage stayed behind and stood waiting before the throne when Sargeras arrived.
Before he was pulled away, Sargeras made one last strike against Azeroth. He drove a massive sword through the planet’s atmosphere and deep into its surface, leaving a gaping wound in the sands of Silithus and barely missing Azeroth’s world-soul. Azeroth’s blood crystallized into a mineral called Azerite, which goes on to cause new conflicts on Azeroth.

The Legacy of Sargeras
Sargeras is arguably the most critical and controversial person in Warcraft’s history. Some regard him as a visionary and redeemer trying to save the universe from the void. Yet others dread him as a tyrant and destroyer who sought to eliminate all living things and creation. Relics like the Eye of Sargeras, Blood of Sargeras, and Mark of Sargeras are some of his artefacts. This means he is the main subject and object of many games and real-life debates. He is known as the dark titan Sargeras, and his influence is far-reaching.
