A single sitemap file can list at most 50,000 URLs (the sitemaps.org protocol limit); beyond that, split your URLs across multiple sitemap files and list them in a separate sitemap index file. lastmod is only included when you provide it — it is never guessed or defaulted to today's date. changefreq and priority are hints to crawlers, not commands — search engines are free to ignore either one entirely.
